I was recently blessed with a trip to Belize. When we arrived, we took what they call a hopper plane to Placencia where we landed and gathered our bags. This airport was tiny, just a dirt runway and small building essentially. A common form of transportation there is golf carts, so we rented one and loaded our bags onto it.
I was sitting in the back, rear facing when I noticed a sweet black and white dog. He came right up to us, wagging his tail. I noticed he had a collar on, however there was no identification tag. This sweet boy looked ok to me in terms of his weight, and I did not get the impression he was with us for food, even though I wondered if I had any for him. We pet him for quite a while and he was so happy! When we finally decided to drive to our destination he suddenly panicked! Oreo (yes, I named him) began chasing the cart and biting the tires! I felt as if he was trying to pop them so we would stop. Oreo chased us for nearly 3 blocks!
Our stay there was lovely, but Oreo stayed in my mind for some reason. One morning I was in a local grocery mart sitting near the front window while my brother and dad shopped. I turned to look outside to find Oreo with his nose pressed against the window staring at me, tail wagging. I went out to greet him, and it was like when you come home to your own dog at home, an excited and joyful reunion! I continued to look for Oreo after that, even cooking him a chicken to bring, but I never saw him again.
On the day before we went home, I learned about Oreo and some other random dogs I would see regularly during our time there. Apparently, there is a dog rescue near the little airport. The more adventurous dog’s break out of the kennels daily to socialize and they round them up at night! I loved hearing about this, and I could see that tourists, expats, and locals equally enjoyed these sweet dogs.
Do you have any dog stories from when you have traveled? If so, I would love to hear about it!
